Nintendo untouched in video games sales decline
Thursday, July 23rd, 2009
It was said that the video games industry will suffer with the biggest decline after the year 2000. This was revealed from last week’s NPD market figures. Yes, there was a 31 percent year-on-year plunge, but Nintendo’s DS handheld is absolutely untouchable.

Added information is that Nintendo this week has moved to take the edge off NPD’s glum news for the U.S. market. The DS Lite and DSi variants of Nintendo became the hot-selling portable.
Both combindly sold over 766,000 units. It was more than all current-generation consoles combined.
The DS is in the market since 2004. The popularity of it has been recently boosted by the arrival of the third-generation DSi. This third-generation DSi comes complete with twin cameras, improved screens, and a more svelte chassis.
The DSi has sold a massive 424,000 units in the month of June. The DS Lite followed close behind with 342,000 units sold.
According to Cammie Dunaway, executive VP of Sales & Marketing for Nintendo, the platform’s enduring popularity can be attributed to more consumers continually moving towards quality experiences and great value for the whole family.

Nintendo DS leads the industry while other suffers
Sunday, June 14th, 2009
Nintendo DS has led the video game system sales of America in the month of May. It has sold 633,500 units. This is in fact a hike of 40% compared to the same month in 2008. The sales were split 369,000 and 244,000 of DSi and DS Lite respectively.

The sales of Wii console of Nintendo were down by 57% over May 2008 to 289,500 units. But, the sales of course pushed the console past the 20 million mark in the US after only 31 months on the market.
On the other hand the Xbox 360 suffered the least of the home consoles. It had only a 6% drop in sales over last year. It is a fact that this console is suffering and it shows just how much the US video game industry is suffering.
The total industry sales has dropped below $1 billion for the first time since August 2007.
The NPD Group’s analyst Anita Frazier says, “The video games industry continues to struggle with difficult comparisons to last year, and this is the first month that industry sales have dipped below $1 billion since August 2007. May is typically one of the lowest revenue-generating months in any given year for the industry in general.”
